Grace for the Anxious
“casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you”
1 Peter 5:7 (NKJV)Anxiety is a heavy bag you were never built to carry all day. Most of us do not notice we are carrying it until our shoulders ache, our sleep thins out, and every quiet moment fills up with rehearsals of what might go wrong. Peter knew that kind of weight. He wrote to believers who were suffering, scattered, and unsure what was coming next, and he did not tell them to calm down and try harder.
He told them where to put the weight: "casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7, NKJV). Casting is a throwing word. In the Greek it is the same picture used when the disciples threw their garments on the colt Jesus rode into Jerusalem. You take something off one place and put it on another, on purpose. Grace for the anxious is an action, not a mood. You name the care, and you throw it onto Him.
And look at the reason Peter gives. It is not that the problem is small, and it is not that the outcome is guaranteed to go your way by Friday. It is that He cares for you. God does not carry our cares because He is strong enough to, though He is. He carries them because He cares, personally, presently, about the person carrying them. That is grace with a face on it.
So here is the practice for Day 23: name the cares out loud, one by one, the bill, the diagnosis, the child, the decision you keep rehearsing at 2 a.m. Throw each one by name, in prayer, and then refuse to pick it back up for the rest of the morning. When your hand reaches for it again by habit, say it plainly: I cast that one. He is carrying it, because He cares for me.
Prayer: Father, I cast my cares on You today, by name, because You care for me. Teach my hands to let go of what my mouth has already given You. Quiet my heart under Your mighty hand. In Jesus' name, Amen.
