Grace for the Far-Off
“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ”
Ephesians 2:13 (NKJV)Far off is a lonely address. Paul describes the old life in hard words: without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. Read that slowly. No hope, and without God in the world. That is as far off as a person can get, and if we are honest, most of us know exactly what that address feels like from the inside.
Then grace speaks two of the sweetest words in the Bible: but now. "But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ" (Ephesians 2:13, NKJV). Everything before the cross was distance. Everything after it, for the one who is in Christ Jesus, is nearness. Paul does not say you might be brought near if you behave. He says you have been brought near. It is done, and it was done by blood, not by your improvement plan.
Notice who did the traveling. You did not claw your way back to God across years of good behavior, apologies, and church attendance. The blood brought you near. Distance was your condition, nearness is His gift, and the distance between those two words is the cross. That is why a believer having a terrible week is still near. Nearness was never built on the week. It was built on the blood.
So if God feels far this morning, feelings are not the map. The blood is. Feelings move with sleep, weather, and circumstances. The blood of Christ does not move at all. You who once were far off have been brought near, present tense, settled fact, and nothing that happened yesterday gets to relocate you back to the far country.
Day 22 of 30 on grace, and here is the practice for today: take sixty quiet seconds and thank God out loud for one specific way you were far off when He found you, and one specific way His nearness has changed your daily life since. Name them. Grace gets stronger in us when it gets specific.
Prayer: Father, thank You that I am not far off anymore. Thank You for the blood of Christ that brought me near when I had no hope and no way back. Teach me to live near today, not just believe it. In Jesus' name, Amen.
