You Cannot Earn It

“Not of works, lest any man should boast:”

Ephesians 2:9 (KJV)

When did you start believing God was keeping score? Somewhere along the way, a lot of us turned the Christian life into a performance review. Be good enough, do enough, pray enough, and maybe God stays pleased.

"Not of works, lest any man should boast:" (Ephesians 2:9, KJV)

Day two of our thirty days on grace. Paul wrote this verse right after the most famous sentence on grace in the whole Bible (Ephesians 2:8). He put it there on purpose. Grace is a gift, and gifts are not earned. If you could earn it, it would be wages, not grace. And wages come with boasting. God shut that door on purpose.

Three things this verse kills dead.

One: the idea that your effort moves the needle. Church attendance, giving, the clean streak, your reputation. None of it bought a thing. It was all gift.

Two: the idea that your failure disqualifies you. If works cannot save you, they cannot unsave you either. The same grace that reached you reaches you again this morning.

Three: the pride that keeps you striving. Boasting was the whole reason He cut works out of the deal. He wanted all the glory for Himself, because He paid all the price Himself.

So put the scorecard down this morning. You are not God's employee. You are His child. Children do not earn a seat at the table. They take it.

Prayer: Father, thank You that my standing with You is not a wage I earn but a gift I receive. Teach me to stop striving and start resting in what Jesus finished. When I reach for the scorecard, remind me the debt is paid. In Jesus' name, amen.
